SLO Otters Increase in Number

Thursday, June 29, 2006

The number of California sea otters on San Luis Obispo County's North Coast jumped 17 percent even as trained observers tallied slightly fewer of the otters over most of their range, researchers reported Tuesday. The three-week count was conducted in May.

The count of 365 otters from Point Piedras Blancas lighthouse to Point Estero is 'one of the highest in years' for that stretch of about 20 miles, reported Brian Hatfield, a U.S. Geological Survey marine biologist. Last year's count was 311.

The overall count from Half Moon Bay to Santa Barbara, about 375 miles, was 2,692 otters, a 1.6 percent decrease from the 2005 count of 2,735.

While an average of about seven otters were counted per mile in the overall area, the North Coast averaged more than 18 otters per mile. An even higher density was found from just south of the lighthouse to near the mouth of San Simeon Creek.

Generations of San Luis becomes The Club Car

Tuesday, June 13, 2006

Randy and Pete Baudendistel have sold their restaurant, Generations of San Luis, to a restaurateur who recently relocated to the Central Coast from Martha's Vineyard, Mass. The deal will close, for an undisclosed sum, by June 30.

"I will absolutely miss this restaurant," said Randy Baudendistel, who bought the restaurant in San Luis Obispo’s historic railroad district two years ago. "But expenses, such as delivery charges, kept going up, and it was hard to keep competitive. It's time for someone else to pick up the baton."

The new owner, Joe Hall, plans to rename the restaurant, at 1815 Osos St., The Club Car as an acknowledgement of the building's place in the county’s railroad history. The restaurant, near the San Luis Obispo Amtrak station, is in the old Park Hotel, also known as the Axtell Hotel, which served train passengers and railroad workers in the early 1920s.

Hall says he does not intend to change too much about the restaurant but instead build on what already is in place. He plans, however, to enlarge the kitchen, repaint the interior and move furniture around to "make it a little more intimate." He’s also looking for a new chef.

Hall had managed The Black Dog, a Martha's Vineyard restaurant, for 20 years until he moved to Arroyo Grande in 2004.
