Now, the hotel has been named one of the 2005 winners of TripAdvisor's Travelers Choice Award for Best Hidden Gem in the country. TripAdvisor.com provides travel information, reviews and advice from travelers across the globe. The awards highlight what travelers have found to be the best hotels in five categories: Top Luxury, Best Hidden Gems, Best Bargains, Best for Families and Best Pools. "The Kon Tiki has always been a property that we've been really proud of," said Suzen Brasile, executive director of the Pismo Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau. "The high quality and consistency of the property is a matter of great pride for the ownership and staff, and it's something that repeat guests have been able to rely on for many years." The 86-room hotel has been a member of the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce since 1974. Owner Henry Myers said being one of the top 10 hidden gems was an honor for the hotel, employees and the city of Pismo Beach. Myers said travelers rated the hotel highly on such things as location, comfort of the rooms and friendliness of the staff. The inn employs 36 people. "We feel honored to be recognized by travelers from throughout the world," he said. "I didn't know that TripAdvisor had such an award, and I was pleasantly surprised that there were only two chosen from the state of California, and we were one of them."
