SLO County News BlogGolf, Wine, Real Estate, Business & Travel NewsSLO's Saltwater Fly FishingTuesday, May 31, 2005San Luis Obispo County fly fishers in search of that whopper fish won't have to venture far to satisfy their desires. The Pacific Ocean may be considered a jackpot for fly fishermen. Who says fishing in the surf zone is limited to traditional surf fishermen with conventional tackle? The fish are there; you just have to know when and where to find them, according to Britt Phillips, owner of Hole in the Wall fly shop in Grover Beach. Phillips is a certified casting instructor and lifetime member of the Federation of Fly Fishers, where he also serves as a regional and national director, a member of the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers Club and a fly-tying instructor. He's also a mentor to novice fly fishers. What Phillips enjoys most are newcomers willing and eager to take a crack at fly fishing. It gives him the opportunity to pass on advice acquired through more than three decades of angling in local waters. He prefers the hands-on approach of personal, sage supervision as opposed to book or video instruction, and the customers benefit. "Unlearning is very hard," he said. "Developing bad habits isn't a good way to start." The ocean, bays and estuaries can be volatile areas. Being aware at all times is a practical starting point for anyone considering fly fishing in saltwater. That includes safety gear like polarized sunglasses, a brimmed hat, sunscreen, waders, booties, a first aid kit and a personal flotation device. Learning the basics of casting from one of the eight certified casting instructors countywide might help. Proper equipment will cost around $300 for a basic fly fishing outfit composed of a rod, reel, flies and line. As summer approaches, local saltwater fly fishers head to the beaches in search of barred, rainbow, shiner and walleye surf perch, California halibut, juvenile striped bass, jack smelt and other seasonal species lingering in the breakers. While freshwater fly fishermen confront challenges of high mountain traversals, wild animals and altitude sickness, Central Coast saltwater fly fishermen confront another hurdle -- finding suitable waters to satisfy their appetite for a day of whipping lines and rising fish, and they're finding it in the surf zone. But catching and landing fish isn't always effortless, Phillips noted. "There's a big difference between fishing and catching," Phillips explained. Fishing means you could go days without catching anything, and other times the fish simply won't stay off the hook -- or fly, for that matter. "Otherwise, where's the challenge?" he said. The government estimates that one percent of all American homes are now worth a cool seven figures. The study asked home owners to provide an estimate of their home value if it were on the market. California was at the top of list. The state had the highest concentration of million-dollar homes, with approximately 4.1 percent or 1-in-25 homes meeting the $1 million mark. Read more at: Times-Press-Recorder Ups and Downs of Highway OneFriday, May 13, 2005Found a good article written by Eric Kalb about his recent trip up Highway One through Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Monterey County. Excerpts about SLO County are included below.Meandering through land as diverse as its 25 million people, Highway 1 is California's most scenic highway—one that is witness to the dramatic growth that has taken place in the nation’s most populated state. I took a freeway, Highway 101, north beyond Santa Barbara and on to San Luis Obispo, where the real beauty of Highway 1 begins. While the two roads often share the same roadbed, it’s at their point of longest separation that the most intriguing part of the trip can be found. Just before I approached the Highway 1 turnoff, I stopped at the Madonna Inn for one last taste of urban consumer life. The subject of scores of documentaries chronicling the crassness of American culture, the Madonna Inn is kitsch incarnate. Its storybook faux Tudor architecture encloses 108 rooms, no two of which are alike. And that’s probably a good thing, for each room has created its own level of bad taste, from the aquamarine chaise longue of the Buffalo Room, to the bright-green carpet and walls of the Safari Room. Eating in the coffee shop, with its red banquettes and gaudy table decorations, was exposure enough for me. And for the fellow who’s just looking for some relief, there’s always the cave man’s men’s room: Instead of traditional urinals, a rock wall complete with a motivating waterfall is at your disposal. The Madonna is a far cry from another of San Luis Obispo’s hostelries, the Motel Inn. Situated a few miles up the road, the Motel Inn was the world’s first motor hotel, built by Arthur Heinemann in 1924. The Spanish-style inn was meant to be the first in a nationwide chain, but, evidently, travelers preferred the bland 1960s motif of Holiday Inns, as Heinemann’s plan never took hold. Rather than utilizing a traditional off-ramp, the turnoff to Highway 1, just north of the Madonna Inn, traverses through San Luis Obispo’s streets, past a few modest, but brightly painted yellow, purple and green Craftsman-style homes. A once-sleepy central California town, skyrocketing real estate prices have turned San Luis Obispo into a property speculator’s paradise. According to the Los Angeles Times, more homes are purchased here as investments, as opposed to primary residences, than anywhere else in the country. With its quiet atmosphere, temperate climate and sufficient distance from the chaos of Los Angeles, it’s easy to see why. A few blocks later, I was on the first rural patch of Highway 1, heading toward the cloud-enshrouded Morro Bay. The ramshackle seaside bars popular in the 1960s are now giving way to new housing developments pushing up against the road, urbanizing another area of the state. This seaside town is defined by Morro Rock, a giant stone outcropping that sits in the bay. You get to the rock via a 1930s causeway. The entire place is a state wildlife preserve, protecting the peregrine falcons that nest on the top. The land spreads out into gently sloping hills populated with a sprinkling of cattle; about 16 miles up the road on the right is the tiny hamlet of Harmony, population 18. Naturally, a town of this size needs its own post office, and it’s housed in the former and still charming Harmony Valley Creamery. As is de rigeur for any village that thrives on tourism, Harmony also has an antique store and art gallery; if you’re not in the mood to buy, you can see the entire place in about 30 seconds. Not so for the next town up the road. Until the 1980s, Cambria was one of that breed of small California towns catering to the working class. Many retired civil servants found their little bit of heaven in the town’s modest cottages, built within the area’s pine forests and along the ocean bluffs. But like so many other towns within easy reach of major metropolitan areas, Cambria now has a new constituency, as the upper middle class seeks a place for its weekend dachas. Coming from Los Angeles, Cambria’s a great place to stop for the night before heading up the more challenging part of Highway 1. You can stay in one of several single-story motels overlooking the ocean, a country house in the woods or in the five-room Squibb House, a 19th-century Victorian structure in the center of town. It also gives one the chance to explore William Randolph Hearst’s opulent Hearst Castle, just north of the town. Designed by Julia Morgan, the first female architect licensed in California, the castle and its three grand guesthouses were built with unlimited budgets. Hearst stocked them with what is said to have been the largest private collection of paintings, silver, tapestries and furniture in the world. The house itself is situated far off the road, past the oceanfront Best Western motel, the Motel Six and the Silver Surf Motel, which scar the seascape. To get to the castle, you park at the state-run reception center, a showcase of fast-food counters, souvenir shops and a movie “experience.” Did I mention they also sell admission tickets here? To take the hour-and-45-minute bus tour up to the house, it’s best to book online before you travel. I've gotten a bit of a reputation for being a wind witch. I was at the helm tonight with the spinnaker up when we saw a black cloud working its way toward us. Peter asked if I wanted to switch, but I said, “No, please, just call wind shifts!” I held on as the wind started howling and the rain started pouring down. It was such a rush. Lee said when the squall started she looked up from the hatch below to see what poor soul was on the helm. She was shocked to see me with a huge smile on my face and slightly demonic eyes. As soon as I got off the helm, the wind died. Come at the right time of year, and you’ll be mano a flipper with a den of 800-pound sea lions, as they bicker and sun themselves on the sand a few yards below. Just remember to bring a facemask if pungent ocean odors don’t agree with you Five miles farther north was the first hint of the unrelenting curves about to come. Now the road began to climb. And climb. And twist and turn. Speeds dropped to 20 miles per hour and the road narrowed. Homes suddenly disappeared from view, replaced by rural mailboxes, the only markers of habitation. The homes themselves are hidden down the seaside cliffs and sport undisturbed 180-degree views of the ocean from 400 feet above sea level. Spirit of Aloha, Eric Kalb SLO's Upper Crust Biscotti SoldThursday, May 12, 2005SLO Pages just last week posted information about San Luis Obispo's Upper Crust Trattoria and their biscotti business started by Terez Tyni 13 years ago. Today we learned in an article in the Tribune that Upper Crust Biscotti has been sold to a local couple for an undisclosed price.New local owners Betsy Albanese and Molly Thurmond took over operations at the High Street bakery this week. Thurmond, a contract attorney, and Albanese, whose career spans 25 years in the catering industry, bring a good blend of business and creativity to the company, Tyni said. "I have taken this business as far as I can take it, and I'm excited to find someone who can take it farther," she said. "I looked for a buyer who really wanted to grow Upper Crust." The only immediate change in store by the new owners is a reduction in wholesale prices, Albanese said. That step should make the company's plain, white and dark chocolate dipped biscotti, Itti-Bittie Cookies and wine-compatible Crustini more affordable to retail buyers, she said. The company's crunchy treats are sold nationwide through Marshall's, T.J. Maxx, wine.com and Upper Crust's Web site, www.uppercrustbiscotti.com. Eventually, the new partners plan to broaden their network of wholesale distributors, including branching into the Asian market, Albanese said, where coffee and tea sales are "skyrocketing." "We think there is a huge market for Terez's biscotti worldwide," she said, "For airlines, corporate favors, and big hotel chains with turn-down service." Tyni initially baked her biscotti in the ovens of the Upper Crust Pizza restaurant she and her husband, Ron, used to own on Foothill Boulevard. As distribution expanded nationwide, Tyni moved the biscotti operation to its current 4,500-square-foot facility. The biscotti sale does not affect ownership of the Upper Crust Trattoria restaurant on Los Osos Valley Road that continues to be run by Ron Tyni. You can make reservations at this popular restaurant - a Coastal Concierge pick - at www.sloconcierge.com. Meanwhile, Terez Tyni plans to concentrate on one of her first loves -- painting water colors and pastels. Several samples hang on the walls of the couple's restaurant. She also has become the first consultant in the area for the CAbi women's clothing line. From article at: Upper Crust gets new owners The Tribune, Leslie E. Fully 35 percent responded with a "10." The happiest residents were those 65 and older, long-term residents, homeowners and families with annual incomes above $50,000. Only four percent of respondents gave a rating lower than five. Those in that group tended to have lower incomes and not own a home. Opinion Studies, a San Luis Obispo research firm, surveyed more than 400 residents by phone in March on topics ranging from quality of life to views on jobs, housing and the environment as part of its quarterly County Trak survey. The next countywide survey will be conducted in June. Businesses or organizations also may purchase proprietary questions to be included in the survey. Upper Crust Trattoria in SLOThursday, May 05, 2005 Upper Crust Trattoria has been serving the Central Coast of California its fine Mediterranean Italian cuisine for over 14 years. We feature over 10 varieties of inspirational salads including our famous Raspberry Salad. Other well known dishes include tantalizing gourmet pizzas baked in their brick oven and innovative pastas like their Fettuccine Toscano. The seasonal fresh fish, as well as the veal, pork, chicken, and steak dishes are stand-alone creations. Chef Martin Gonzales has been making these items for over 14 years. Many of their desserts are Upper Crust's own creations, including Tiramisu, Creme Brule and all the delightful varieties of Upper Crust Biscotti. The owners, Ron and Terez Tyni have been in the restaurant business for over 25 years and have never wavered in their commitment to excellence in quality of ingredients or service. They moved to the Central Coast nearly 20 years ago to bring to this area a unique dining experience that has become the premiere casual restaurant in the area. The Tyni's have recently embarked on another venture with the same enthusiasm in deciding to dedicate their talents to the catering business. With Terez's creative culinary and artistic skills and Ron's ability to bring together his dedicated staff, they will exceed most everyone's expectations. Another venture, Upper Crust Biscotti, was created one evening when Terez Tyni decided to offer something special with the after-dinner coffee being served at Upper Crust Restaurant. She transformed a traditional biscotti recipe with tasteful flourishes of her own, then baked it twice (according to tradition) in a pizza oven (not according to tradition). The diners raved about the taste; sweeter and more flavorful than others. They loved the texture; neither too hard nor too crumbly. After that night, it seemed everyone had heard of a certain restaurant's exclusive biscotti, and the rest is history. Finally, the operation outgrew the restaurant, and the company moved into its own 4,500 square foot manufacturing plant in San Luis Obispo. Now, Upper Crust Biscotti is like a real-life Willy Wonka chocolate factory, with a dipping machine that melts over 100 pounds of chocolate each day. A waterfall of chocolate continuously flows from the machine and coats over 800 biscotti in one hour. For well over ten years now, their biscotti products have grown in popularity, finding their way into coffeehouses and gourmet stores across the country.
