Right here in our county.The vehicle theft rate of the San Luis Obispo County area landed at the bottom of the state's list during the past three years in a recent study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The nonprofit group compares the number of vehicles reported stolen against every hundred thousand people, using numbers from the 2000 census. The study, which has been conducted for two decades, mirrors FBI statistics and looks at areas with a population of at least 100,000 people. The vehicle theft rate here last year was 169 vehicles per 100,000 people. By comparison, Modesto -- with the highest car theft rate in the state and the country -- had a rate last year of about 1,571.
