Chalk Mountain in Trouble?

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Chalk Mountain, the county's 27-year-old golf course in Atascadero, is in such bad shape that it is losing golfers to other courses and may be on the road to closure, according to a new report.

The county may have to get out of the golf course business altogether because of declining use and deteriorating income, warns the grim report prepared for the Board of Supervisors.

The General Services Department are asking for a one-time, $350,000 infusion of cash to fix problems at Chalk Mountain. But in doing so, they have raised a major policy question: Should the county use taxpayers' money to subsidize golf? Until now, the courses have paid for themselves.

Depending on how the supervisors answer that question, they could end up closing one or more of their three courses, which also include Dairy Creek and Morro Bay Golf Course.

In Chalk Mountain's heyday, the early to mid-1990s, approximately 80,000 golfers a year played a round. Today that number has slipped below 40,000.

Mar 24 - Dairy Creek to Host 10th Anniversary

Thursday, March 22, 2007

San Luis Obispo's Dairy Creek Golf Course is throwing a birthday party Saturday to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The celebration will honor the more than 500,000 golfers who have played the course by rolling prices back to 1997 rates (50 percent off today's green fees).

This will be a casual, fun day for golfers who have not played for awhile to come out and get acquainted with the course and other golfers.

Dairy Creek Golf Course, a county-owned park, is operated by Fairway Management, which also operates the Morro Bay Golf Course in Morro Bay State Park. Fairway Management is a California-based company involved in managing golf courses and providing food service.

May 21 - Young Life Golf Marathon

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Calling All Golfers! The 3rd Annual Young Life Golf Marathon is scheduled for Monday, May 21, 8am shotgun start, at the premier Blacklake Golf Course in Nipomo. Play 100 holes of golf, have lots of fun, and help raise money for Young Life in San Luis Obispo. It's easy! All you have to do is get 10 of your friends to sponsor you for $1 per hole to raise a tax-deductible $1,000 donation for SLO County Young Life.

"Wait just a minute! I can't play that many holes." You don't have to be a great golfer to do this. Each golfer plays two balls on every hole using the best ball for each stroke played; that is like having a "mulligan" for every shot! Each completed hole will count as two holes played. Stop early if you want, that's okay too. It is a really fun day and a wonderful way to support the local Young Life ministry at San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande High Schools.

We will have exclusive all-day use of "The Oaks" course. Entry fee is $1,000 in pledge support. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

The most unique and fun golf experience of your life; you won't want to miss it! For more information or to sign up, contact:

SLO County Wine Industry Tripled in Last Decade

Tuesday, March 06, 2007

The first study on the wine industry's impact in San Luis Obispo County is out and it shows the region is at a tipping point in becoming a Napa or Sonoma Valley.

The study found wine grape vines like these in San Luis Obispo County are generating more than one-and-a-half billion dollars for the local economy and if the industry plans correctly it could start to generate even more.

The study commissioned by the Economic Vitality Corporation and the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance shows the wine grape industry in San Luis Obispo County is now triple the size it was ten years ago.

The rapid growth ranks Paso Robles and the greater San Luis Obispo County third in the state, just behind Napa and Sonoma Valleys.

To bring in even more money to the local economy the study recommends the industry plan wisely.

Some of the ways the wine and wine grapes industries impact San Luis Obispo County's economy are, the industries pay 162 million dollars in wages, the region's wine's retail value is 763 million dollars, and the industries generate 97 million dollars in tourism.

Apr 28 - SLO Tour at Monarch Dunes

Thursday, March 01, 2007

The 4th Annual SLO Tour charity golf tournament will be held this year at Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo on April 28, 2007. The 1:00pm Shotgun Start tournament benefits the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter, part of the Economic Outreach Commission of San Luis Obispo County.

Every night there are between 2,500 and 4,000 people in need of a place to sleep in San Luis Obispo County. The Maxine Lewis Shelter can only help a percentage of these people. Many nights they have to turn people, including women and children, away because they do not have the facilities to accommodate large numbers of people. SLO Tour helps by raising funds so they can build more beds and improve their facilities.

You can participate by being a principle sponsor of the event or coming out to play a round of golf at the beautiful new Monarch Dunes Golf Course.
