The Wine Institute reports that there are 1,367 brick and mortar wineries in California. About one-half of them are located in Napa and Sonoma counties. San Luis Obispo County is third with just over 100 wineries.

Over a half a million acres are in production in California with 60 percent dedicated to red varietals and 40 percent planted with white varietals. There are 14 different red varietals with over 1,000 producing acres. A total of 33 red varietals are planted in California.

Cabernet Sauvignon is at the top of the list with Merlot and Zinfandel showing about one-third less plantings. Pinot Noir is fourth on the list with about one-fourth of Cabernet Sauvignons acreage. There are about 10,000 acres of Barbera planted.
