Cal Poly Wins Big West ChampionshipWednesday, April 26, 2006The Cal Poly Men's Golf team, which led by 12 strokes after Monday's 36 holes, added three strokes to the final margin on Tuesday to win the Big West Championship.NCAA regional bids will be announced May 8. Cal Poly qualified for the regionals as a team a year ago following its second-place Big West men's finish. The 2006 West Regional will be held May 18-20 at the Tucson National Golf Club. Travis Bertoni equalled the score he posted to win the 2005 Big West Conference men's golf individual championship. Bertoni finished with a nine-under-par 207 total following a six-under-par 66 on the 6,918-yard, par-72 layout. It was Bertoni's 12th career round of 66; his personal record is a 65 accomplished twice, once as a sophomore in the Santa Clara Invitational and the other as a junior in the UCLA Gold Rush. Bertoni, who had a 69 and a 72 on Monday, led Cal Poly to its first-ever Big West golf championship. The Mustangs carded a four-person, 54-hole, 11-under-par 853 total to beat UC Irvine by 15 strokes. Long Beach State was another four strokes back in third place.
