Cal Poly Men's Golf First after 2 Rounds in Big West Conference Championships

Four Cal Poly golfers are among the top eight finishers after two rounds of play in the Big West Conference Championships, being held at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club.

The Mustang men lead the team standings after 36 holes by 12 strokes, carding a four-person three-under-par 573 total Monday. UC Irvine is second with a 585 total, followed by Cal State Northridge (588) and Long Beach State (589). There are seven schools competing in the men's tournament.

On the women's side, Cal Poly is last among five schools competing for the conference title. UC Irvine leads with a 15-over-par 591 total, 30 strokes ahead of Long Beach State. Cal Poly logged a 651 total.

Individual leader in the men's championship is Ryan Panichpakdee of Long Beach State with a six-under-par 138 total after carding rounds of 68 and 70. He is three strokes ahead of Cal Poly senior Travis Bertoni, bidding for his fourth win of the spring season and 12th of his Mustang career.

Bertoni shot rounds of 69 and 72 for a 141 total and is tied with Joe Ryon of UC Santa Barbara (70-71--141). Fourth place belongs to Derek Uyesaka with a 142 total.

Bertoni, a Paso Robles High School graduate, won the Big West individual title a year ago and is a two-time Big West Player of the Year.

Cal Poly, bidding for its first-ever Big West title, also placed J.J. Scurich, David Lewinski and Kevin O'Brien in the top eight Monday.

Scurich shot 70 and 74 for a 144 total and is in a tie for fifth place while Lewinski and O'Brien share eighth place with 146 totals. Lewinski shot a 74 in the morning and 72 in the afternoon while O'Brien was just one stroke off the lead after his 69 in the morning but carded a 77 in the afternoon.

Colin Peck shot 75 and 73 for a 148 total and is in a tie for 13th place.

Cal Poly's only golfer in the top 20 of the women's standings after 36 holes is Allison Wing, who carded an 81 and 77 for a 14-over-par 158 total, tied for 15th place.

Hannah Brabb (85-78--163) is in 22nd place, Jessica Huss (86-79--165) is 24th, Jilayne Lovejoy (83-85--168) is in a tie for 27th place and Kelly McEachern (84-84--168) also is tied for 27th place.

Selanee Henderson of UC Irvine matched par with 69 and 775 for a 144 total, four strokes ahead of both Carling Cho of UC Irvine and Kay Koey of Long Beach State.

Final round for both the men and women is scheduled this morning.
