Introducing Loren Roberts

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

PGA Tour player Loren Roberts was born and raised in San Luis Obispo, Ca. Loren played high school golf at San Luis Obispo High School and worked as an Assistant Professional at the Morro Bay Golf Course in Morro Bay, Ca. He attended college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, where he was later inducted into the Cal Poly Hall of Fame in 1998.

Loren Roberts made his Champions Tour debut last week with a 1-over 72 at Royal Aberdeen to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Senior British Open. Roberts, who turned 50 on June 24, overcame some uncharacteristic three-putts and the strong North Sea wind that blew across the course and kept anyone from breaking par. Roberts stole the show from Greg Norman, another 50-year-old in his senior debut. Norman, coming off a tie for 60th last week in the British Open at St. Andrews, struggled in the wind and shot 76. Roberts ended up finishing 4th in his first Senior British Open.

Loren is currently 85th on the 2005 PGA Tour Money List with $592,330 and has played in (14) events and made (9) cuts. Loren finished 78th on the money list in 2004 with $998,677, placing him in the top 100 for the 17th consecutive season.

A memorable moment from his career was the 1999 GTE Byron Nelson Classic. After failing to finish in the top 30 on the money list in 1998 for the first time since 1993, Loren returned with a solid year. A third-round 62 matching career-low produced a 54-hole lead at the GTE Byron Nelson Classic and a tournament-record 16-under-par 194. He finished tied with Steve Pate with tournament record 18-under-par 262. Loren won the playoff with a par on first extra hole. His father, who spent 1998 looking after his Alzheimer's stricken wife, was in attendance for first time in nearly a year. He joined Loren when Byron Nelson presented Loren with the championship trophy.

In 1994, Loren won The Nestle Invitational with closing 67 to defeat Fuzzy Zoeller, Vijay Singh and Nick Price by one stroke. That year he had three top-10s in major tournaments: T5 Masters, T2 U.S Open and T9 PGA Championship. Tied with Ernie Els after 18-hole playoff at U.S. Open, but lost on 20th hole.
